How do reduce amount of body fat, but retain lean muscle w/out going on Atkins-type diet or having no energy?

You know, how do you reduce percentage of body fat w/out becoming emaciated-looking? How do you "tip the balance" of body fat to lean muscle mass ratio without feeling tired or getting sick…You need enough carbohydrates to have energy. I’m not interested in an Atkins diet. The Soy Zone is a book I read and liked, but what kind of exercises, repetitions, amount of weight should one do?

You should be doing firming and toning exercises to build and tone muscles. Lift weights. More weight , less repetions to build muscles.

Exercise constantly, but know that diet is 70% of weight loss.

Also figure out why you want to burn carbs for energy, when you could be burning off body fat.

I do 4 or 5 45 minute cardio sessions a week, plus a couple of aerobics classes a week. I also do strength training. Pilates classes are perfect for toning muscles. The perk of working out so much gives me the benifit of eating what I want when i want.I am 5’9" and wiegh 132 lbs. The key is to stay active. Get off the couch.

YOu make it really hard to answer your question intelligently. When you add conditions, you effectively eliminate options for achieving your objective. For example, "I want to lose weight but I still want to eat more calories than I burn off" is a real tough one.

But that notwithstanding, here’s what I recommend: Change your lifestyle and do this forever. Drink lots of water, walk, run, or swim an hour every day except 1 then do stretching and upper body toning. Eat fruits & vegetables.

No alcohol
no bread
no burgers
No candy
No chips
no corn
no fried foods
No pasta
No pizza
No potatoes
No sodas
No sugar

Now, I suggest also that the more you run, walk or swim, the leaner you will be, especially the longer you exercise over 1 hour. You see, the body begins to burn fat after about 30 minutes of exercise – which is about the time most people quit. And don’t overlook the fact that the leaner your look, the fewer curves you will have: or at least, there will be less to the curves.

Good Luck

Eat nourishing food with plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables being part of it. Chew each morsel at least 32 times. This will activate signal to the brain as soon as u have had enough. Besides this change in eating style, take regular light exercises and brisk walks every day. U will be able to gain/shed all extra weight gracefully and in a reasonable time span.
